Nahum
preached to Nineveh about 150 years after Jonah. Jonah proclaimed a message of mercy,
while Nahum preached of doom.* This verse contains a warning: while
God’s wrath was averted in Jonah’s day, Nineveh should expect punishment
now.
Although
this warning is directed at Nineveh, it can be applied to anyone who continues
to live in sin. We may be lulled into a
false sense of security by the reminder that God is slow to anger, but heed the
warning: he is great in power. No one knows when he will decide to unleash that
power on the guilty. Never forget that the holiness of the Lord demands that
sin be punished.* Someone
has to pay the price – whether it be the guilty person or the perfect
sacrifice.
