Ephesians 3: 12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. (NIV)


To separate faith from confidence would be an attempt to take away heat and light from the sun.*


In my previous job, I and my colleagues from around the state went to the State Capitol to lobby our representatives regarding proposed legislation. I was with my counterpart from another county when we ran into one of her legislators in the hallway for a brief chat. I expected similar encounters with my representatives - except for one. I had been friends with him and his wife more than 20 years; and his aide was my former next-door neighbor. As it turned out, my friend was in a meeting when we got to his office, but his aide (my former neighbor) volunteered to take us to his boss in spite of my insistence not to bother him. He escorted us to a door that opened onto the dais of the meeting room and revealed my friend sitting there. When he spotted me, he didn’t just smile and wave in acknowledgement of my presence – he got up from his important (and perhaps boring) meeting and came out to talk to us. Not surprisingly, my colleague was impressed by my warm reception from such a prominent person! 

Contrast that kind of approachability with the story of Esther. She risked her life to approach the king without an invitation. . . And then look at our access to God. We don’t need an appointment. He doesn’t have his secretary screen his calls. We don't have to wait fearfully while he decides if we are worth his time. Jesus has removed all obstacles from our path to the throne of the most powerful being in the universe. 

There may be dangers in approaching God carelessly* or in becoming unduly familiar,* but let us rejoice in the freedom and confidence with which we may draw near to God. With Jesus as our royal escort, we are always welcome in the presence of God. He never has more important business to attend to.


The same freedom that gives us confidence to speak to God also gives us confidence to fellowship with him.*

I Thessalonians 5: 25 Brothers, pray for us. (NIV) We can do a great deal for people after we pray for them but little of lasting value until we pray for them.* I am guilty of thinking – and even saying – that prayer is the least I can do. Really? Is there something else I can do that is more powerful than praying? Paul doesn’t seem to think so – he ends his letter to the Thessalonians with this request for prayer and nothing more. There are reasons why we get a little judgmental when someone says, “I’ll pray for you.” One reason is we don’t believe he will actually do it. Sometimes it’s just something to say because we are socially awkward and don’t know what else to say. Often, offering to pray for someone is a way to avoid offering to do something for him.
