I
once heard an unwed mother say that she planned to have more babies because the
more children she had, the more money she got from the state. She didn’t
understand that the more children she had, the more money she needed. That was
not a very solid financial plan.
God’s
grace is sort of the same as the foolish mother’s plan. The more we sin, the
more grace we receive. But God’s grace isn’t like money in the bank that draws
interest. God’s grace is sufficient for
all our sins – there is no way to generate more than enough of it and we can’t
stockpile it to cover future sins.
The wrong attitude
toward God’s abundant grace could lead us to become like Paul’s audience who
believed that
as long as a Christian had faith it made no difference what kind of life he
lived.* Being “dead to sin” means that we are free from the guilt and
from the power of it.* As children of the King, how can we
even consider returning to our old life of slavery to sin?
