Hebrews 11: 6 Without faith it is impossible to please God. (NIV)


Faith is indispensable to a good relationship with God.*


The eleventh chapter of Hebrews is a tribute to God’s faithful people. Get your Bible and read about them. What does it say about how, in their hearts, they believed in God? Nothing, actually. What we learn in this chapter is what these heroes did. Does it tell us that they were saved by their works? No, it doesn’t. It tells us that by faith they demonstrated their faith through their actions. And God was pleased with them.

Without faith, it is impossible to please God. Not just because of the missing element of faith, but because without faith, there are no fruits of faith. Conversely, you could work yourself to death for the cause of Christ and it would be wasted effort if you lacked faith. Without faith, nothing you do is good enough. And, as we read in James 2: 17, “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”


Faith is more than conviction of the reality of the facts that God has unveiled. Faith also exists as response to those facts.*

I Thessalonians 5: 25 Brothers, pray for us. (NIV) We can do a great deal for people after we pray for them but little of lasting value until we pray for them.* I am guilty of thinking – and even saying – that prayer is the least I can do. Really? Is there something else I can do that is more powerful than praying? Paul doesn’t seem to think so – he ends his letter to the Thessalonians with this request for prayer and nothing more. There are reasons why we get a little judgmental when someone says, “I’ll pray for you.” One reason is we don’t believe he will actually do it. Sometimes it’s just something to say because we are socially awkward and don’t know what else to say. Often, offering to pray for someone is a way to avoid offering to do something for him.
